North Las Vegas Spanish Academy

A city in the desert area in southern Nevada, North Las Vegas is rich with Hispanic culture and Latino heritage with a population that continues to grow, including those with Hispanic and Latino origins. According to the U.S. Census’ 2006 survey, the city contained a total population of 190,291. Roughly 40 percent of that population came from Hispanic or Latino origins- at 73,219. The majority of those residents – 55,020 – used the Spanish language inside their homes.

North Las Vegas acknowledges its Hispanic heritage by taking part in events and activities like National Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. Area libraries also come together for events like Hispanic Awards of Excellence and heritage programs, and Latino community outreach. The North Las Vegas Library always has available multicultural materials to help children better understand the Hispanic heritage and also take part in it with Mexican artifacts, crafts and games, as well as bilingual storytime. Many of the celebrations are aimed at teaching children important elements of Hispanic and Latino culture, as it seems to be becoming a larger part of North Las Vegas’s livelihood.

North Las Vegas’s diversity and strong Hispanic traditions are just a couple of reasons why children would benefit from learning more about the Spanish language and culture. Why do you want your kids to learn to speak Spanish? Please share your thoughts with us on the feedback form to the right.
